A 1998 study by Claudia M. Mueller at Columbia University found that a group of fifth graders were able to complete an assortment of puzzles by themselves.

Regardless of their performance in the puzzles, each child was congratulated and then told they performed better than most others.

The other half of the students were told that it was all because they were gifted and clever, and then they presented each with three different types of puzzles: easy, medium, and difficult.

The scientists found something very interesting. The students who were told they did well because they were smart, spent the majority of their time on the easy puzzles and spent almost no time on the extremely challenging ones.

Some of the puzzles that participants solved indicated lower levels of motivation and when asked about their enjoyment levels, they said that it wasn’t very fun for them.

On the other hand, those who were told they did well because of their hard work spent the majority of their time on the difficult puzzles.

After the test, they solved many more puzzles and spent a long time on them. This is a clear sign that motivation levels are up and that they actually enjoyed the activity.

From this study, we can understand that there’s a concept called the locus of control, which leads to an individual believing that they have control over their life.

An internal locus of control is the belief that one’s own actions determine one’s outcomes – as opposed to an external locus of control, the belief that outside forces determine one’s outcomes.

In other words, an internal locus of control is when people believe they are in charge of their own destiny.

There are many ways you can grow your internal locus of control.

One way is to take on challenges and not be afraid to fail. Another way is to focus on what you want and not what you don’t want. Then there are things like meditation, visualization, and affirmations which can help as well.

Those children believed that it was factors they controlled that led to their outcomes.

They believed it’s all the hard work and extra effort they put in that allowed them to ace the puzzles right, which is why I’m always putting my best effort into doing things.

There are many studies about the locus of control for motivation and all of them found that having an internal locus is key.

You must feel like you have control over your life and that you are responsible for the things that happen to you. If you want to feel motivated all of the time I saw this happen with my own eyes.

You need to be an extremely motivated individual to be able to face hundreds and hundreds of rejections every single day before someone even considers buying something from you now.

We can’t always control the world around us, but we can control how we react to it. External locus of control is a personality trait that describes how much you believe your life is controlled by external forces.

The good news is that you can grow your locus of control.

People with an external locus of control tend to believe they are not in charge of their own destiny and that luck or fate is controlling their lives.

Locus of control is one of the most studied topics in psychology and it can be used to predict many important aspects of people’s lives. For example, people with an internal locus of control are more motivated to take on tasks and are less likely to experience depression.

Some people believe that the locus of control has nothing to do with motivation, but this is not true because those with an external locus of control feel more helpless and tend not to take responsibility for their actions.

You can’t control whether or not you’re born talented.

People who have an internal locus of control are more likely to be motivated to work for long periods of time. On the other hand, those with an external locus are less likely to be motivated and those with no locus are the least likely to be motivated.

Example:

I am a sales manager and I once had a salesperson who faced their first bad day. They made no sales, which prompted me to ask them: “Why do you think you didn’t make any sales today?”

I would see how they would respond if they blame things like the weather, the fact that it’s a weekend and nobody wants to be bothered on the weekends, or because it was the neighborhood. I would instantly know that they wouldn’t last because they haven’t seen anything yet.

They thought that the reason for their low sales was because of outside factors. They assumed it was unachievable, so they stopped knocking on doors which was the main cause of their lack of success.

That’s the downside of an external locus of control. When you feel like nothing you do matters, or that the world is conspiring against you, then you don’t work as hard.

You have less motivation because what’s the point of working towards your goals when it feels like anything can get in your way at any time?

What keeps a person motivated?

Motivation is the driving force behind a person’s desire to pursue a goal or objective. It is what keeps people going when they feel like giving up. Motivation can be fueled by an outside source, but it can also come from within.

There are many things that can motivate a person. These include:

– Recognition: Being recognized for your work, being praised and getting credit for your accomplishments

– Achievement: The feeling of accomplishment you get when you reach a goal or complete a task

– Intrinsic motivation: The drive to do something because it is interesting, enjoyable, or satisfying in its own right.

The locus of control is a psychological term that refers to the degree of control an individual has over the events in their life.

So, how do we adopt an internal locus of control so that I can start feeling motivated all the time?

Often, the best way to help yourself is to solve problems in your own life and then take some time to appreciate the fact that it was your actions that solved the problem.

The key to never being demotivated is believing you have a lot of control over your life, knowing that you are able to control your own destiny and things will be okay.
